The 2017 Rochester International Film Festival is three days, dozens of films, and thousands of film lovers. Thursday, April 20th through Saturday, April 22nd, 2017 at the Dryden Theatre in the George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY.
The Rochester International Film Festival has the distinction of being the longest-running, continually held, short-film festival in the world. The festival is a favorite venue for independent filmmakers. Each festival screens a wide variety of narrative films, documentaries, and animations created by independent filmmakers from all around the world.
The first Rochester International Film Festival was organized and held in 1959 by Movies On A Shoestring, Incorporated. The group’s name has a double meaning beyond the fact that amateur filmmakers have tight budgets. In the 50’s and 60’s they also tended to use narrow, 8mm film, often referred to as “shoestring gauge.”
Since that first event, the festival has grown. Now 1,000s of film lovers come to enjoy short films of all genres from filmmakers around the globe. Narrative films, documentaries, short-form animation, and more will entertain attendees.
Submissions to the Rochester International Film Festival go through a strenuous, multi-level review process. The only criterion being that each film must clock in at under 30-minutes in length. Even films that don’t make it into the festival may earn a Certificate of Merit for excellence in cinematography, storytelling, and other categories.
All films screened at the festival are awarded the Shoestring Trophy. Other awards include Certificate of Merit, Honorable Mention, and Best of the Fest.
