“Sonnenberg” is German for “sunny hill” – and that is a fitting, if rather understated, name for one of our country’s most extensively preserved Victorian era country estates. Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park is 50 acres of formal and informal gardens surrounding historic Sonnenberg Mansion. The estate is one of just two public gardens in the New York State Parks System.
A variety of gardens can be found and explored at Sonnenberg. There is a Japanese Garden, a Rose Garden, Italian Garden, Pansy Garden, Children’s Garden, and more. There’s even a Rock Garden!
The first floor of Sonnenberg Mansion, built between 1885-1887, is handicap accessible. Visitors will enjoy visiting its impressive Great Hall, Library, Drawing, and Dining Rooms. The Billiard and Trophy Rooms, as well as the Master Bedroom upstairs are also of great interest.
The grounds also include a greenhouse complex, Roman bath, aviary, gift shop, on-site café, and the Finger Lakes Wine Center – all just blocks away from downtown Canandaigua!
Sonnenberg Gardens’ season runs from May 1st through October 31st every year. The park runs a number of special events throughout the summer, including teas, concerts, and symposiums.
Whether you’re a fan of architecture, history, gardening, landscaping, or just a lovely place, you’ll enjoy a visit to Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion!
