American jazz pianist and composer, Thelonious Monk, may have passed away in 1982 but his effect on the genre continues to echo on. Monk’s unique improvisational style made him a controversial figure during his early years in the jazz world. His numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, however, dispelled doubts of his genius. He remains the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington.
Geneva Music Festival celebrates the 100th anniversary of the jazz legend’s birth with the Thelonious Monk Centennial Celebration. This special event is set to include Monk’s son and international jazz sensation in his own right, T.S. Monk.
T.S. Monk will leads the riveting night of jazz from his drum set, with special guest vocalist Syndee Winters opening the show. The Geneva MLK Choir will also make a guest appearance during the show.
The Geneva Music Festival is a professional chamber music festival held every year in June. The event sees internationally acclaimed artists performing in venues around the Finger Lakes region, including Geneva, Canandaigua, Auburn, and Skaneateles.
The 2018 Geneva Music Festival takes place May 31 through June 17 and includes a variety of events, from jazz and chamber music to spirituals and bluegrass.
