April 24, 2017 by Corey A. Edwards

The 2017 Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival
The week-long, 2017 Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival brings a host of art events and more than 40 artists from across the U.S. to Canandaigua, NY in a competition to capture the beauty of the Finger Lakes in paint. June 6th through the 11th in Canandaigua, NY.

If you’re an art lover, you won’t want to miss the 6th annual Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival. The opportunity to observe so may artists out and about and working on canvases is an uncommon pleasure.

“En plein air” is a French expression meaning “open air,” thus plein air painting refers to painting outside. Part of the challenge is to complete your scene before the light changes too much, thus you are in a competition with time and the elements with plein air painting. French impressionist painters Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and others were advocates of the method.

During the Finger Lakes Plein Air Competition & Festival, Canandaigua will open its gardens, vineyards, woods, and fields with character to the artists. The town is also opening its doors! Sutherland House is proud to be one of the many locals who volunteered to host an artist for the festival week.

The Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival includes a number of other events, as well.

Downtown merchants will “Adopt An Artist” to exhibit a particular artist’s work for sale throughout the week. An Art Walk and Reception for these artists will be held on Thursday, June 8th from 6pm to 8pm.

A Paint Out along the Canandaigua Wine Trail is scheduled for Wednesday, June 7th, in Naples, NY. Participating wineries will host artists throughout the day with a Wet Paint Sale and Reception of their finshed works at Hazlitt’s Red Cat Cellars from 6pm to 8pm. Follow the wine trail to catch various artists at work throughout the day, then see all the results in one place!

June 10th will see the Quick Draw competition in downtown Canandaigua, testing the speed of the Plein air artists. A judging and sale follows at the Canandaigua Commons, between 12pm and 2pm. The Community Paint-Out event sees local and regional artists doing much the same as the Quick Draw. The show and sale from this event occurs between 1:30pm and 5pm. Both events are scheduled for Saturday, June 10th.

This year’s judge for the event, Sara Linda Poly, will be giving two painting workshops during the festival. Lots of other, smaller events will be held around town all week long.

An Public Exhibit & Sale of works completed for The Finger Lakes Plein Air Competition will be held on Sunday, June 11th, at Sonnenberg Gardens. The ticketed Preview Party & Exhibit, held the night before, will provide an even earlier opportunity to purchase art as well as talk with the artists.

Attend The 2017 Rochester International Film Festival!

April 3, 2017 by Corey A. Edwards

2017 Rochester International Film FestivalThe 2017 Rochester International Film Festival is three days, dozens of films, and thousands of film lovers. Thursday, April 20th through Saturday, April 22nd, 2017 at the Dryden Theatre in the George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY.

The Rochester International Film Festival has the distinction of being the longest-running, continually held, short-film festival in the world. The festival is a favorite venue for independent filmmakers. Each festival screens a wide variety of narrative films, documentaries, and animations created by independent filmmakers from all around the world.

The first Rochester International Film Festival was organized and held in 1959 by Movies On A Shoestring, Incorporated. The group’s name has a double meaning beyond the fact that amateur filmmakers have tight budgets. In the 50’s and 60’s they also tended to use narrow, 8mm film, often referred to as “shoestring gauge.”

Since that first event, the festival has grown. Now 1,000s of film lovers come to enjoy short films of all genres from filmmakers around the globe. Narrative films, documentaries, short-form animation, and more will entertain attendees.

Submissions to the Rochester International Film Festival go through a strenuous, multi-level review process. The only criterion being that each film must clock in at under 30-minutes in length. Even films that don’t make it into the festival may earn a Certificate of Merit for excellence in cinematography, storytelling, and other categories.

All films screened at the festival are awarded the Shoestring Trophy. Other awards include Certificate of Merit, Honorable Mention, and Best of the Fest.
