American jazz pianist and composer, Thelonious Monk, may have passed away in 1982 but his effect on the genre continues to echo on. Monk’s unique improvisational style made him a controversial figure during his early years in the jazz world. His numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, however, dispelled doubts of his genius. He remains the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington.
